Joel R. Meyers handles all types of criminal defense, from drug and firearm offenses, to homicide, to white collar crimes. His practice is not limited to when someone is charged, as representation often begins prior to charging decisions being made. Joel is frequently called upon to handle a wide variety of post conviction relief including direct appeal, compassionate release motions, and habeas petitions.
Joel began his career in 1997 at the Queens DA's office, where he was assigned to the Narcotics Investigations Bureau, handling all aspects of international drug prosecutions.
In 2001, he joined the Manhattan DA's office, and was first assigned to the Money Laundering and Tax Crimes Unit, where he conducted complex financial investigations. He later spent eight years in the Labor Racketeering Unit, leading prosecutions of organized crime members in New York City's construction industry.
In 2008, he relocated to New Mexico, where he served as a federal prosecutor with the United States Attorney's Office for the District of New Mexico. He was assigned to the Organized
Crime Section, but later became the Supervisor of that Section, and served as part of the management team of the Office. In that role, he supervised a team of prosecutors and support staff. While there, he also served as Lead Task Force Attorney for the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces, supervising all wiretaps for the District.
During his tenure with the Department of Justice, Joel was a highly sought after lecturer, frequently teaching classes at the National Advocacy Center.
For his entire career as a prosecutor, Joel handled all aspects of his cases: investigations, charging decisions, trials, and appeals.
In 2018, Joel left the Department of Justice, returned to New York, and joined a multi-firm team defending a C-suite executive charged with violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Since entering private practice, Joel's practice has taken him around the country defending numerous persons and organizations. Joel has completed dozens of jury trials in Federal Court, and has argued frequently at the Court of Appeals. Joel prides himself on his ability to make himself available to clients and their families, as well as leveraging his vast experience to ensure their best possible outcome.
We recognize in times of emergency, when hours make a difference, typical 9-5 business hours are not what you and your loved ones need. Once he is on your team, Joel is reachable practically 24/7.
